LOS ANGELES (March 18, 2016) – Beginning its third decade of producing world-class theater, the not-for-profit Geffen Playhouse announces its upcoming season featuring some of theater’s most celebrated and award-winning artists. They include: Obie and Helen Hayes Award-winning playwright Robert O’Hara, Pulitzer Prize winner and Geffen Playhouse favorite Donald Margulies, Obie Award-winning writer Matthew Lopez and Olivier and Drama League nominated playwright Nick Payne.

The six plays currently announced in the Geffen Playhouse’s Gil Cates and Audrey Skirball Kenis Theaters include: the world premiere of ICEBERGS, written by Alena Smith and directed by Geffen Artistic Director Randall Arney; the West Coast premieres of BARBECUE, written by Robert O’Hara and THE LEGEND OF GEORGIA MCBRIDE, written by Matthew Lopez and directed by Mike Donahue; and new Geffen Playhouse productions of CONSTELLATIONS, written by Nick Payne; THE MODEL APARTMENT, written by Donald Margulies and directed by Evan Cabnet; and THE LION, written and performed by Benjamin Scheuer and directed by Sean Daniels. Two additional productions will be announced shortly.

“This season we are thrilled to offer an incredibly varied and rich collection of plays that remind us that a single moment has the capacity to change the trajectory of our lives,” said Geffen Artistic Director Randall Arney. “An ordinary day in which something extraordinary occurs – this is the premise on which drama is built. And in selecting the plays for this season, there arose a variation on this theme. Each story explores a solitary moment or decision that dictates everything that follows. How many times a day, a week, a year, do we make these life-altering decisions? A choice made for the family, a decision to stay or go, a leap of faith in a career – each leads to a path that will define the rest of these characters’ lives.”

“The upcoming season reflects where we are as a theater and as a culture,” said Geffen Playhouse Executive Director Gil Cates, Jr. “These complex, dynamic plays hold true to our mission to support new works, expand our audiences and entertain the city of Los Angeles.”

2016/2017 GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE SEASON

BARBECUE
Written by Robert O’Hara
September 6 – October 16, 2016
Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse
West Coast Premiere
From Obie and Helen Hayes Award winner Robert O’Hara comes a raucous and rollicking new comedy about sibling love and loathing. This Barbecue skewers any ideas we have about the families we think we know.

The Model Apartment
Written by Donald Margulies
Directed by Evan Cabnet
October 11 – November 20, 2016
Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater at the Geffen Playhouse
Pulitzer Prize winner and Geffen Playhouse favorite Donald Margulies (The Country House, Coney Island Christmas, Dinner with Friends) tells the dark and surreal story of Max and Lola, a retired couple who are ready to live out their days in a deluxe seaside condo, but find themselves haunted by the lives they’ve left behind.

Icebergs
Written by Alena Smith
Directed by Randall Arney
November 8 – December 18, 2016
Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse
World Premiere
Playwright Alena Smith (The Affair, The Newsroom) and Geffen Playhouse Artistic Director Randall Arney bring you to Silver Lake on a hot summer night in early November, where four friends (and an agent) navigate filmmaking, fossil-finding and family planning.

The Lion
Written & Performed by Benjamin Scheuer
Directed by Sean Daniels
January 4 – February 19, 2017
Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater at the Geffen Playhouse
Los Angeles Premiere
A good storyteller uses everything he has. So Benjamin Scheuer (Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance) uses his guitar — actually, six guitars — in The Lion, as he leads you on a rock n’ roll journey from boyhood to manhood, through pain and healing, to discover the redemptive power of music.

The Legend of Georgia McBride
Written by Matthew Lopez
Directed by Mike Donahue
April 4 – May 14, 2017
Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse
West Coast Premiere
Matthew Lopez's (writer of Obie Award-winning play, The Whipping Man) heartwarming tale of an Elvis impersonator who finds that life as a performer can be quite a drag is, indeed, legendary. At this small-time club in the Florida Panhandle, the King may be leaving the building, but the queens have just arrived.

Constellations
Written by Nick Payne
June 6 – July 16, 2017
Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse
Los Angeles Premiere
Nick Payne’s Olivier and Drama League nominated play Constellations comes to Los Angeles following a hit Broadway run. Ben Brantley of The New York Times asks, “Who knew that higher physics could be so sexy, so accessible — and so emotionally devastating?” A play that balances on the question of “what if” is, at its core, a profound picture of “what is.”
