ANDY GARCIA AND THE CINESON ALL STARSBRING CLASSIC CUBAN JAZZ AND MAMBO TO THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE Thirteen-Member Band Returns to the Geffen on Saturday, January 7 & Sunday, January 8, 2017 LOS ANGELES (November 14, 2016) – Grammy®, Latin Grammy®, and Emmy® Award-winner Andy Garcia returns to the Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse with his high energy Cuban musical group, Andy Garcia and The CineSon All Stars, for two evenings on Saturday, January 7 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, January 8 at 7:00 p.m. Hailed for its authentic sound and dynamic performances, the band’s vibrant style is rooted in the music of the late, legendary Afro Cuban bassist Israel “Cachao” Lopez, who is known for inventing the mambo rhythm along with his brother, Orestes Lopez. Members of Cachao’s original band are among the thirteen musicians that make up Andy Garcia and The CineSon All Stars, which has captivated audiences around the world. “What was most important to Cachao was to keep alive the traditions of Cuban music. This is the journey that I am privileged to be a part of and continue to celebrate in his honor,” said Garcia. Andy Garcia and The CineSon All Stars has appeared at venues and events ranging from Radio City Music Hall, The Palazzo - Las Vegas, the Conga Room, Catalina Jazz Club, to BB King’s Blues Club, the Greek Theatre, and the Hollywood Bowl, along with concerts in Deer Valley, Utah, France, Italy and Moscow. Special appearances include those at the Latin Recording Academy Grammy Acoustic Sessions, the Calle Ocho Festival at Carnival Miami 2016, and a tribute performance honoring the “Queen of Salsa” Celia Cruz during the Grammy Salute to Music Legends ™ televised concert. “We are delighted to welcome Andy Garcia and The CineSon All Stars to the Geffen stage for a second time. This fantastic ensemble truly creates a one-of-a-kind experience and is a great representation of the range of work we are proud to present at the Geffen this season,” says Gil Cates, Jr., Executive Director of the Geffen Playhouse. Well known for his Oscar® and Emmy nominated performances as an actor, Andy Garcia’s film and television credits include Ocean’s Eleven, The Untouchables, Stand and Deliver, The Godfather: Part III, HBO’s Ballers, and many more. Garcia is equally respected for his skills as a music producer and performer. A longtime collaborator with Arturo Sandoval, he produced the soundtrack with Sandoval for Garcia’s film At Middleton, and produced and performed on the For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story soundtrack, for which Sandoval received the Emmy® Award. Garcia credits his love of Cuban music to Cachao, his late mentor and collaborator, whom he first encountered in Miami after leaving Cuba with his family. “He took me in not only as a musical protegé but as an extended member of his family,” says Garcia. In 1993, Garcia made his directorial debut with Cachao…Como Su Ritmo No Hay Dos, a feature length documentary. Over the course of 15 years Garcia encouraged a career comeback for the iconic bassist; producing and collaborating on four albums with “Maestro” Cachao before his death in 2008.
